GMU Student Builds Faith and Homes in Maryland
George Mason undergraduate participates in Habitat for Humanity project sponsored by local church
(Fairfax, VA – August 29th 2012) In twelve days, hundreds of students from various universities across the United States, including George Mason undergrad Dan Montero, gathered together to participate in a volunteer community service project in the small town of McHenry, Maryland. Organized by Habitat for Humanity in connection with many smaller Roman Catholic congregations, the students worked hard to service the community of McHenry with everything from yard cleanup, trash removal, house painting, handicap-accessible ramps, and home renovation.
The non-profit program in McHenry was a true showing of both youth and young adult devotion to the wellness of a community of both elderly and underprivileged stature. Teams of 10-15 volunteers spread out amongst the needing community in the early hours of the morning to provide selected families with necessary handiwork, while arriving back mid-evening for a nighttime bible study and practice of faith. “It was a great way to be able to give back to the needing community” said George Mason student Dan Montero, who assisted in the building of a handicap-accessible ramp for an elderly patron.
Habitat for Humanity has gained its reputation through nationwide community service work and strong ties to the Christian faith. It has provided an easily accessible way for volunteers to not only give back to the less-privileged, but allow participants to grow stronger in their faith together. “I encourage anyone to participate in similar programs given the opportunity” says Montero.
